I was in London last week to speak and present photographs at the Outdoors Show/Boat Show at London Excel, and also to present a prize at the Outdoor Photographer of the Year Awards at The Print Space Gallery. Both events went really well and were tremendous fun. The talks at the Outdoors Show were well attended (thanks to all of those that managed to put up with me for over an hour!) and despite the distractions of a tradeshow things seemed to go beautifully well. It was also great fun to go to the awards, especially as I finally managed to catch up with a load of lovely people who I 'knew' by email and phone but had never actually met! The above photo is of me talking with Elizabeth Roberts, the editor of Black & White Photography magazine - in the background behind Liz and almost cut off by the edge of the photo is the brilliant and legendary landscape photographer Joe Cornish, a real gentleman and a delight to talk with. SPEAKING AT THE OUTDOORS SHOW IN LONDON

NEW PHOTOGRAPHS FROM SOUTH OF THE EQUATOR

I have just returned from a 2 week trip to Tanzania and Zanzibar in East Africa, spending quite a lot of time shooting the fishing dhows, the iconic triangular sailed boats used by the locals to fish and import and export goods to the mainland. It was a great trip, with fantastic weather and enough wind to fill those beautiful sails. The locals are unbelievably friendly and much more chilled than many African countries I've visited. And then the food....... I didn't take any waterproof housings with me due to weight restrictions on the charter flights, so had to shoot chest deep in the Indian Ocean being very careful not to drop the cameras! Some of the photographs are in the New Works portfolio of the website, with more to follow in an 'Equator' Portfolio very soon.

ICELAND - A SPECTACULAR DISPLAY

I just got back from Iceland, one of my favourite places on the planet and somewhere I have spent about 2 months over the last 3 years. As usual this amazing country, the newest on the planet, just blew me away - the landscape, the air, the people, the food - all these things are truly wonderful. We were also treated to a spectacular display from the Northern Lights, two nights running no less, which was an emotional treat for all concerned (see above photo). I'm going back next year for two photo tours, one in July and one in September, and truthfully I can't wait! TALL SHIPS IN THE SHETLAND ISLANDS

I have just returned from the very lovely Shetland Islands where I was shooting the start of the second leg of the 2011 Tall Ships Races. The rugged coastline of these fabulous islands provided the perfect backdrop to these magnificent sailing vessels, and the weather - windy, stormy and foggy, was absolutely perfect - for me anyway! The adverse conditions meant that the race start was delayed by 24 hours - a good excuse to get on board the boats, chat to the crews, and of course try out the local pubs and restaurants in the northern most town in the UK. When things finally got going it was well worth waiting for, and while the sports photographers I met were all understandably moaning about the conditions, things couldn't have been better for me!. I shall be adding new photographs from the trip on the website soon - there will also be an article and photos in the November edition of Black and White Photography Magazine.

Starting this Autumn we at Ocean Capture are offering a series of photography workshops aimed at all levels of photographer on the very lovely Jurassic Coast in the south of England. I shall be leading the first one at the beginning of September which is a specialist black & white and long exposure workshop. Subsequent courses will be led by the very talented Kathy White - see her work here. Kathy lives in Dorset and knows the secret spots better than anyone. She is also a skilled teacher both in photography and editing/post processing and she and I have worked together on many occasions. RAFTS AND BOATS AND PLANES....

The last 3 weeks has seen me travel from France to Italy then over to China and back to France again. Quite a surreal feeling to be speeding across the Venetian lagoon in a vintage wooden speedboat one day, then up the Li River in China on a bamboo raft a couple of days later. But of all the modes of transport recently experienced, the most adrenalin inducing, buttock clenching ride was without doubt the motorbike taxi across Paris between the two major airports on my way to China. 160km per hour through the traffic jams on the peripherique was certainly an unforgettable journey, and one I shouldn't have been in a hurry to repeat, and yet for some very strange reason I found myself jumping on one on the way home..... well you just have to, don't you...... The UK National Health Service, or NHS as they are better know, have invested in several of my prints for display in various hospitals and clinics throughout England and Wales. This image, Silent Shore, shot 4 years ago on a beach near my home in France, is one of the images chosen. 'We hope the ethereal quality of Jonathan's work will have a soothing effect on visitors to these centres' a spokesperson said.

UPGRADED ACCOMMODATION FOR BIARRITZ WORKSHOPS

Over the last couple of years I have gathered a lot of feedback regarding the style of accommodation I use on my various trips. This information has led me to make a change to the establishment that I shall use for the Biarritz/Landes workshops in France this year and going forward. I am upgrading the accommodation on these workshops to a wonderful boutique B&B, the Domaine de Bellegarde, a beautifully restored 19th century stately home set in 2 hectares of private wooded parkland in Soustons, in Les Landes, around 35-40 minutes drive North of Biarritz. The Domaine de Bellegarde, complete with heated swimming pool, tennis courts and a stable of bikes for your use free of charge, has been run very successfully by a young Anglo-Australian couple for the last 5 years. When I first saw the place it blew me away - the size, style and space is exceptional, and the rooms, all en suite, are fabulous. Soustons is around 5 km from the coast, and has a large lake with watersports such as sailing, windsurfing etc which is 10 minutes walk from the Bellgarde. It also has restaurants, shops, chemist, banks etc. A wonderful place to come an unwind, and of course to immerse yourself in your photography.... ACQUA ALTA AND OTHER STORIES FROM VENICE

I'm in Venice again, the 9th time in 4 years, this time to concentrate on shooting the 'Acqua Alta, the famous, or rather infamous tidal condition that floods the central parts of the beautiful and iconic city. I left my room at the hotel just off St Mark's Square just before dawn this morning to be confronted by a reception area flooded with a foot of canal water, and the rather surreal sight of the reception staff matter-of-factly going about their business in black wellies, sloshing up and down fetching keys and attending to their guests. The square itself was flooded with over 2 feet of water, and made for a very spectacular sight. I took this photograph of San Giorgio from in front of the Doges Palace. At breakfast later the restaurant too was flooded but this small detail did not deter the staff of the hotel who sat me and my sodden wellies down at a table with a great view and proceeded to serve me a hearty meal - in 8 inches of water........

THE BIG MOVE

So, as Christmas dashes towards us like a turbo-powered sleigh, and 2011 is only a heartbeat away, things are hotting up down here in France. Not the weather...no, the weather has been terrible - 3 weeks of rain - and although I love storm clouds better than practically anyone, I find myself longing for a glimpse of what used to be called 'the sun'. Not really a good time then to be making a huge move - house and office premises.....

Over the last 4 years since its conception Ocean Capture Photography Workshops has gone from strength to strength, starting as a few dates here in France and now stretching to 9 countries with over 30 dates annually. During 2010 Donna Bond joined the company, bringing with her her skills as a PA and organising all new enquiries and logistics and putting into place a much needed system to cope with the rising demand - this system is now practically up and running and will certainly improve client contact and make it easier to book trips and receive all-important information. Donna is based in the UK and can be reached at info@oceancapture.com.

I am also adding 'guest' photographers to the Ocean Capture stable - trusted, talented individuals who will work with me to open up new water based destinations in the UK and worldwide. The first of these is Kathy White, a wonderful seascape photographer based in the south of England. Kathy and I have worked together on many occasions and I know she will do a great job for Ocean Capture. For 2011 Kathy is leading trips to Snowdonia (April) and Ireland (TBC). Lastly, the first part of a two part plan to open Ocean capture bases in France and the UK takes place in December this year.I am opening an office base in the legendary surfing town of Hossegor, 30km north of Biarritz in south west France. The premises, nestled amongst the European HQs of all the top surf brands, will house the studio/editing facilities for all Biarritz based workshops, with the addition of more printers, wide screen TVs for slideshows and much more. The second phase will take place at the end of 2011 with a similar base close to Lyme Regis in Dorset, UK - right next to the wonderfully dramatic Jurassic Coast.

Exciting times ahead. And on top of all that - we're moving house too, back to Les Landes, land of lakes, forests and Atlantic beaches, and next to my favoutite place for shooting down here in France, the very atmospheric Soustons Lake (jetties, mist, mmmm...) - we're in the process of completely renovating a 19th century fisherman's cottage just a few metres from the lake itself and 5 minutes from the beach. We're due to be moving in on the 17th of December.

I'm writing this from my hotel in Rekjavik, having just returned from a 3 day shoot in the west of Iceland. This amazing country never fails to come up with the goods, with great skies, incredible scenery and the nicest people you can imagine. I set off tomorrow along the south coast for waterfalls, icebergs and breathtaking lunar landscape - can't wait! This photograph is from the west coast a couple of days ago. More to follow soon.

BEHIND THE SCENES IN THE CAMARGUE

I was lucky enough to spend a few days in the company of some very special animals recently, when I travelled down to the Camargue on the Mediterranean coast of France to photograph the magnificent wild white horses native to that area. The horses have been living in the Camargue for thousands of years, and although there are a number of theories on how they got there, no-one knows for sure. What is certain is that these lovely, gentle animals were a joy to work with and photograph, both galloping through waters and, like in this photograph above, at rest. While I don't by any means intend to turn my hand to wildlife photography, I did want to capture these animals in their natural, maritime environment. I am very excited about returning to the Camargue in October to continue my work with the horses, and will be running a workshop there in June 2011 for others who may be interested in photograph these wonderful creatures. I'm very proud to announce that I have been approached by legendary German lens manufacturer CARL ZEISS to help with the testing and innovation of their amazing camera lenses. Zeiss, who have been producing high quality optics since 1846, are reknowned for designing and constructing the finest camera lenses on the market today. I shall be testing 5 or 6 lenses for them over the forthcoming months, and will be putting them through their paces in coastal environments in Iceland, Saint Tropez and of course Biarritz. I shall also be contributing articles to their monthly newsletter.

CRUISE SHIP AZURA LAUNCHED

The month of April saw the launch of the P&O Cruises luxury flagship AZURA in Southampton, England. The official launch ceremony was performed by ballet dancer Darcy Bussel in front of guests, press and officers and staff. In each of the luxury staterooms and cabins there are at least two of my sailing photographs - the ship has over 3400 prints of my work in total (above, luxury stateroom with two of my photographs displayed - photo courtesy of P&O Cruises). A real floating gallery for the next 30 years!

The June issue of the British photo magazine DIGITAL SLR USER features my photo of the pier at Capbreton, France on the cover plus an 8 page interview with over 12 photographs in the mag itself. As this months 'Big Interview' subject I get to answer a load of questions about me and my photography - some of them cool and some of them a tad bizarre... The photographs they use in the feature are from France, Iceland, Venice and London. I'm really delighted with the whole thing - thanks to the editing staff of the mag who did a great job in putting it together. In all good newsagent in the UK now!

CHINA PHOTOS NOW ONLINE

15 new photographs from my recent trip to China are now on the website . I spent most of my time in the Guilin/Yangshuo area, basing myself on the wonderfully misty and mysterious Li River (above photo). Yes I'll admit that at times setting the alarm for 3.30am was rather tedious but once up and about and travelling down the staggeringly beautiful river on a bamboo raft powered by a washing machine motor, the days just weren't long enough. On the second half of my trip I was joined by a group for a photo tour I was leading there - a great bunch from the UK and Australia. Not only did the locations blow our minds, but we seemed to be constantly in fits of laughter. Nothing to do with the local beer either, strangely....

NEW PHOTO TOURS & WORKSHOPS FOR 2011

After the incredible success of the Ocean Capture photo workshops this year, and with there only being a handful of places available for the rest of the year, I am expanding this side of the business and adding new locations and formats for 2011. Currently we visit Biarritz, Venice, the Pyrenees, the Camargue, The Gironde, Iceland and China. New locations will include the north west coast of Ireland, Nova Scotia in Canada and Brittany in France. A new Ocean Capture centre will open on the south coast of the UK from where I shall run many UK dates including one and two day editing workshops, black and white and long exposure workshops and tours along the incredible coastline of Dorset and the New Forest. Water will of course continue to be the main theme of the workshops and tours, and the groups shall remain small, making for a more complete experience for all concerned!

STORMS IN FRANCE

Many thanks to all those who have emailed to find out how we are after the recent storm and flooding in western France. Although I was actually with a workshop group in the area most badly hit at the time, everyone is fine. Biarritz and the surrounding area fortunately escaped with very little damage and things returned to normal very quickly. Our thoughts are of course with those who lost their homes and loved ones.

NEW PRINT OF THE MONTH

I've had so many emails asking me whether I am going to reinstate the print of the month that I have finally got off my backside and done so!

Print of the month is an open edition series aimed at regular visitors to the website who would like to start a collection of my photographs but don't necessarily want to pay out for the limited edition series. Each print measures 12cm x 12cm and is printed by myself on a beautifully textured fine art paper.

The first of these new prints of the month for February 2010 is 'Sails of the Iona' (above)shot in the Cote d'Azur last autumn. The photograph was made by shooting through an aged paper sample to give this lovely antique feel.

I have received confirmation that the UK broadsheet newspaper the SUNDAY TIMES is running an article on my workshops this Sunday 17th January. French based journalist Mike Peake, formerly editor of mega mag FHM, spent 2 days with me as part of a 4 person workshop in Biarritz in October. Despite admitting to only having ever used a compact camera 'badly', Mike proved a very able student and was very soon taking some very lovely photographs. He has since bought himself a Canon DSLR and turned into a bit of a monochrome demon!

IN FLIGHT MAGAZINE FEATURE The Autumn issue of British Airline BMI Baby's in flight magazine will feature an interview with Jonathan plus one of his photographs. The magazine, with viewing figuers of over 750,000, will be available free on all its flights during October and November. The photograph is to be one from the Lac du Salagou near Montpellier in France.

SOLO FRENCH EXHIBITION There wil be a two week solo exhibition of Jonathan's work in the French city of Dax at the end of July. The exhibiton, entitled LES LANDES INAPERCUES (Les Landes - Unnoticed) will feature 36 of Jonathan's photographs from the Landes region of France, an area he called home for over 10 years. Being held in the city's Library, the exhibition runs from the 20th-31st July 2009, with the vernissage on wednesday 22nd at 18.30.

The ship, which is 290m long and holds 3100 passengers will have in each of its 1600 cabins at least 3 of Jonathan's photographs printed onto canvas, sized between 60x60cm and 135X135cm. The photographs chosen by P&O are all from the Sail portfolio and feature classic yachts such as the Mariette and Moonbeam V, all photographed in October 2008 in Saint Tropez.

This month's (April) issue of UK cult photo mag Black & White Photography contains a 6 page interview with Jonathan as well as a collection of the sailing shots taken in Saint Tropez last October. The piece covers Jonathan's beginnings in photography as well as details about the shoot and the inspiration behind the photographs.

THE GREAT STORM Thanks to all those who sent messages of concern after hearing of the storm, Cyclone Klaus, which hit south west France last saturday 24th January. We are all fine, and thankfully this part of the area wasn't too badly affected - mostly trees down and no electricity or water for a few days. Southern Landes and the Biarritz area is already pretty much back to normal - many areas were thankfully untouched but even those that were damaged have displayed an uncanny aptitude for self repair and are already healing, once again beautiful. Thanks again.

ARTICLE IN FRENCH NATIONAL NEWSPAPER In November journalist Jean Marc Flipo spent a day with Jonathan writing an article destined for French daily newspaper Sud Ouest. The full page interview covered Jonathan's passion for the sea, his decision to make the south of France his home, his influences and of course his work. 'Up until this point my profile as a photographer was much larger in the rest of Europe and the US than in France,' Jonathan says, 'but the interview with this newspaper has generated a great deal of interest in my work here. The emails and calls I've had since it appeared have been very positive, particularly about the body of work I've achieved in and around the area I live - the French are very proud of their country and the beautiful and varied countryside and coastline it offers, so they seem very pleased that this 'Rosbif' has chosen to live and photograph here!'
